ESRB Announces New Digital Ratings System That Breaks Down Features

Now you’ll be able to see what features a downloadable game has to offer – before you download it!

The ESRB has been rating games just about over 20 years now, starting in the olden (yes, that’s a word) days of Mortal Kombat and making its way through today’s titles, including Call of Duty: Black Ops II.  But now it’s doing something a little bit different for digital titles, and the service they have to offer.

The ratings board announced that it will be providing these details with a variety of games, including releases for Windows 8, Xbox Live Arcade and titles in the Wii U eShop.  These break down not only the elements that you’d normally see listed in an ESRB rating (like “drug use” and “violence”), but also stuff like what titles share info with other users (along with location) and whether you interact with other users, and on what level.  Basic stuff, really.

This system is set to take effect immediately.
