With the release of The Last of Us Remastered this week, Sony proved it can bring quality PlayStation 3 experiences to PlayStation 4. Granted, it’s no stranger to the process, as it delivered a number of PlayStation 2 releases like Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, the God of War games and Ratchet and Clank trilogy to the PS3. However, this feels like a whole new ball game, and the company will soon follow with a remade Ratchet & Clank sometime in 2015, with a little help from Insomniac Games.
That said, we came up with a list of five great games from Sony’s past that would look wonderful on the PS4. Sure, it may take some time and effort, but we have a feeling these ports would be well received with both fans of the originals and new players alike.
Sly Cooper: Thieves In Time
When it first released in 2012, Sly Cooper: Thieves In Time was greatly overlooked. That’s why we believe the master burglar, along with his helpful crew, deserve a second chance on the PlayStation 4.
Just imagine a game featuring sharper cel-shaded visuals, consistent 60-frames-per-second speed, lavish worlds and best of all, gameplay that would take advantage of the DualShock 4, particularly with sneaking around and finding bonus treasures. That, and maybe even Sanzaru Games (Thieves In Time’s developer) could even throw in a multiplayer component.
This is one heist we certainly wouldn’t get tired of, especially with remastered visuals.
The Uncharted Trilogy
With Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End ready to hit the PlayStation 4 next year, Sony has a grand opportunity to re-introduce players to the trilogy of games that started it all for Nathan Drake and company. That’s why it would be a smart idea to bring together the three previously released Uncharted games for a new generation of players to enjoy.
The original Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune remains an entertaining adventure, one filled with plenty of twists and turns that only Naughty Dog could deliver. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves was even better, with beautiful environments, sharp gameplay and a new multiplayer component. Finally, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception finishes off the PS3 trilogy with even more elaborate action sequences and improved multiplayer.
Yes, we know that Naughty Dog is busy, but if anyone should bring the full Uncharted experience to PS4, it’s them.
Super Stardust HD
Although it is nearly six years old (released in October 2008), Super Stardust HD continues to be one of the better twitch shooters in existence, with its frenetic twin-stick gameplay and colorful visuals. Considering its developer, Housemarque, is used to the PS4 hardware with its magnificent Resogun, what’s stopping the studio from reworking its magic on Super Stardust HD for a new generation?
There are plenty of opportunities that could come from a port like this. The team could introduce more modes, more planets could open up with far greater enemies to destroy and obviously, the community could be challenged with a number of tournaments and other chances to win through the PS4’s Share option.
This is one of those timeless experiences that would be right at home on PlayStation 4. How about it, Housemarque?
Journey
It’s obvious that Sony can take thatgamecompany’s work and put it on a new console, ala flOW and Flower. Why can’t the same be done for the outstanding Journey?
The team’s latest release is easily one of its most mesmerizing to date, thanks to visuals that expand as far as the eye can see and universal gameplay that players of any skill level can easily get into. Not to mention the quirky but unique co-op feature, where random players can jump into your adventures and have a good deal of fun. There’s no question this experience would shine on the PS4.
Sure, we might have to wait a bit – this is far more an intricate experience than Flower – but we’d certainly wait if it was done right.
PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale
This one is a long shot, especially considering the development team isn’t working with Sony anymore. Still, there are a couple of reasons why a remastered port of PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale is just what the PlayStation 4 needs.
The number of fighting games on the system is low. Injustice: Gods Among Us is a great brawler, but outside of that, there isn’t much to choose from. All Stars could easily provide not only a feasible multiplayer experience, but also one that would take advantage of the PlayStation Network.
Second, just imagine all the Share clips that would come from a game like this. Watching Sackboy put the smack down on an unsuspecting Kratos? There’s a lot that can be done here community-wise.
Here’s hoping that Sony gives it at least some consideration – even with some new DLC to go along with it.
