The saga behind Nintendo’s Mother (Earthbound) series is a weird one. The original Famicom game never found a U.S. release, nor did Mother 3 for the Game Boy Advance. The second game, however, did find a release on the SNES on U.S. shores as Earthbound, and is coming back later this year as a Virtual Console title for Wii U.
Rose Colored Gaming announced that it is working on a reproduction of the original Earthbound Zero for the NES, complete with special red casing – as you can see above – and complete localization. The cartridge will contain a ROM of the classic adventure, so you can discover it for the first time – even if you’re quite familiar with Earthbound’s world.
There’s no word yet on when the cartridge will enter production, but the team is working to produce “as many of these as possible for as long as possible”. We’ll let you know when it releases.
Meanwhile, check out that sleek redness. We haven’t seen a cartridge glow that brightly since Maximum Carnage on the SNES and Sega Genesis.
