Devolver Digital Acquires Croteam

It’s a marriage of sorts.

Publisher Devolver Digital and indie developer Croteam have worked together for over a decade. Croteam has made a number of games that Devolver has published, most notably the Serious Sam series. With such a storied history, it should come as little surprise that Devolver Digital has decided to step in and acquire Croteam.

Devolver Digital Acquires Croteam

The announcement that Devolver Digital acquired Croteam came earlier today as part of a heartwarming blog post from the Devolver team. In it, they talk about the origins of Croteam leading up to the creation of Serious Sam and Devolver’s involvement in publishing the game.

The friendship forged from this connection has lasted over a decade with Devolver publishing games from Croteam including The Talos Principle and of course, other Serious Sam games including the latest series entry, Serious Sam 4.

It seems natural that the two partners would come together a little more, well, officially. The analogy used in the blog post is that the two have been dating so long they’ve decided to just go ahead and get married. No, really, that’s what’s written in the blog post.

“Since then Croteam and Devolver Digital have partnered on dozens of games – from the frantic Serious Sam series to the award-winning The Talos Principle across PC, consoles, VR and mobile platforms. Croteam and Devolver Digital have been dating for so long that we decided to go ahead and just get married.”

When acquisitions happen, there’s bound to be concern from fans of the developer in regards to whether there will be changes made to future titles. Devolver was quick to address these concerns, saying that Croteam will keep all of their creative freedom.

“Devolver has acquired Croteam…or maybe Croteam has acquired Devolver…who could really know at this point in the relationship. What’s certain is that our future together is ultra exciting with new projects like The Talos Principle 2, more Serious Sam games, and original IP from Croteam and the Croteam Incubator studios. Croteam will of course keep total creative freedom and Devolver Digital gets to keep making dumb recommendations that Croteam just ignores – we prefer it that way.”

It’s always nice to read through a post about two partners coming together, and the unbreakable bond of a decades-long friendship. We wish Croteam and Devolver Digital continued success on their upcoming and future projects. Speaking of which, the blog post ends with an encouragement for gamers to buy a copy of Serious Sam 4, and we’re going to double down on this as well.

If you want to support Croteam and Devolver Digital and send them a “wedding gift” of sorts, you can buy Serious Sam 4 on Steam, and follow both Devolver Digital and Croteam on Twitter for updates on that mysterious “original IP from Croteam and the Croteam Incubator studios” mentioned in the blog post.
