Devil May Cry HD Collection Gets Surprise Steam Update, Cuts Installation Size in Half
Jackpot.
CAPCOM dropped an update for Devil May Cry HD Collection on a random Monday on Steam, and it’s actually doing something fairly substantial despite the publisher’s usual vague patch notes for older titles. Today’s update reduces the collection’s overall installation size by half.
The New Update Cuts the Collection’s Installation Size in Half
Devil May Cry HD Collection, which includes the first three titles in the series, received a 1 GB update today (September 28, 2026) on Steam, reducing the overall installation size from 11.3 GB to just 4.5 GB.

So, how did they achieve that? Essentially, the update replaces the existing FMV video files encoded in WMV with WebM files. Each video file’s size has been reduced substantially.
For instance, the DMC-HD_AttractMode_JP.wmv file, which was 113 MB, has been replaced with DMC-HD_AttractMode_JP.webm, which is just 15 MB. This has been done across the board, reducing the overall installation size by around 6.8 GB. You can see the changelog yourself on SteamDB.

CAPCOM’s own patch notes only mention the following:
- Verified compatibility with Windows 11
- Miscellaneous bug fixes
It would’ve been nice to get more detailed patch notes whenever CAPCOM updates its older releases, but alas, we have to rely on SteamDB to figure out what has actually changed. The Windows 11 compatibility fix may also be related to the video changes, although CAPCOM hasn’t explained exactly what was changed. WebM is a more modern video container with broad support, while the collection previously relied on WMV files and older video technology.
Since these files are now substantially smaller, there is potentially a tradeoff in image quality depending on how they were encoded. However, the reduction in file size alone doesn’t necessarily mean there’s a noticeable loss in quality. In fact, some users who have compared the new files report that the quality looks roughly the same as before and can’t spot any obvious differences.
To be honest, the HD Collection wasn’t exactly that large in the first place, and while I appreciate updating the video formats for compatibility, I think compromising, even if only slightly, on quality should be avoided. A larger file size that preserves the original quality would’ve been preferable when switching to the newer format.
From what I can tell, no DRM has been added, and CAPCOM still hasn’t enabled Steam Cloud support for the HD Collection, which is something it desperately needs. SteamDB currently still lists no cloud-save configuration for the game. Finally, since this is a completely random update, existing mods may be broken until mod authors update them for this patch.
Does this mean CAPCOM is finally doing something for the original DMC titles? I doubt it, but it’s nice to see some form of support after all these years.
