Destiny 2’s Next Expansion The Witch Queen Has Been Delayed to 2022

Eyes up Guardian.

Today Bungie announced that it will be pushing back its yearly Destiny 2 expansion from 2021 to 2022. This is a major announcement as it means there will not be a major expansion for the game this year. However, Bungie offered plenty of insight and information behind the cause of the delay, and what content will be in its place to ensure players have something to do throughout the year.

Destiny 2’s Next Expansion The Witch Queen Has Been Delayed to 2022

The dev team goes into heavy detail on the reasons behind the delay on their blog which can be found here.

“Last summer, we outlined our ambition for the next era in Destiny 2 by announcing the full arc, starting with Beyond Light, followed by the Witch Queen and Lightfall. As we began to scale production on the Witch Queen last year, we made the difficult but important decision to move its release to early 2022; we also realized we needed to add an additional unannounced chapter after Lightfall to fully complete our first saga of Destiny.”

The team goes on to talk about three important reasons why they felt the delay should happen.

The first reason is they simply needed more time to properly tell the first chapter of The Witch Queen. It’s an important step in the conclusion of the “Light vs. Darkness” saga they introduced in the beginning of Destiny 1. More time gives them the proper resources to carve out the path leading up to it.

The second reason is that Bungie wants to improve upon the foundation of Destiny 2 in interesting and innovative ways. That means looking at the way it handles weapon and armor upgrades, PvP focusing, crossplay, and transmog.

The third and final reason, as many could have guessed, is the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Forcing the staff to work at home has certainly put a wrinkle in every developer’s plans, and Bungie is no exception.

“Making this choice is not one we took lightly. Believe me, as someone close to The Witch Queen’s progress, there’s no one more than us that wants to get it out as soon as it’s ready. But at the end of the day, we know we’re making this call for The Witch Queen and future chapters in Destiny 2 for all the right reasons, ones that puts our team first and our game at the quality bar we strive for ourselves.

We’ll have more to share on The Witch Queen and beyond in the late summer of this year.”

The Witch Queen has been moved to the first half of 2022, and we will continue to update more as information comes out. As for now, be sure to stay connected with Prima Games on the official Prima Games Twitter and Facebook pages.
