Destiny 2 Shadowkeep Ending And What That Means for the Future of the Game, According to Bungie

If you thought Destiny 2 was slowing down, you'd be dead wrong.

The Destiny 2 Shadowkeep ending was a twist and a half and the latest expansion was yet another breath of fresh air for the online game from Bungie. Guardians were faced with the Darkness in a much more immersive way than ever before and a few characters made their triumphant return – for better or worse. With the recent Dawning event and Season of the Undying additions, the story has become even more complex and infinitely darker with a tease of something infinitely more sinister on the horizon.

With the ending that players experienced in Shadowkeep, there is so much more on the horizon, something that Bungie creative lead Robbie Stevens and narrative lead Nikko Stevens talked about in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter. But it wasn’t just the story that evolved, the basic game mechanics shifted as well. Stevens spoke about their story model changes and how there is an even bigger story ahead:

“This is a large cosmic force unlike anything the players have seen before. It has its own intrinsic power and abilities that we’re just scratching the surface on and what the Darkness actually means. The way the player interacts with the ship begins to slowly pull back the curtain on what these cosmic beings really are.”

With each season comes a new story puzzle piece and the season ahead promises to be the biggest shocker yet. Stevens added, “What they are is being told through the lenses of characters. Even if someone directly references it, they’re given their point of view. Moving these throughlines forward, these big touchstone releases like Shadowkeep are going to unfurl those stories.”

The pair added that they are in the thick of “putting the pieces in place for the future” and that all of the hidden moments, the subtle changes, and all of the evolutions seen in how we know the Darkness will all add up to a moment worth waiting for.

The Destiny 2 Shadowkeep expansion, not unlike the Forsaken expansion, has been met with incredible praise and high player counts. It looks like the road post-Activision split has done the studio some good and we can’t wait to see what else the team has in store post-Destiny 2 Shadowkeep ending.
