Collective sigh of relief from Q4 games as GTA VI launch date gets delayed

It was only a matter of time, anyway.

Did you hear that? That was the sound of every developer eyeing a 2024 Q4 release heaving a massive sigh of relief, as Rockstar officially delayed the launch of GTA VI. So, when is the new launch date? Why the delay? And who didn’t see this coming?

Why has Rockstar delayed GTA 6?

Why do they delay every mainline GTA game since at least IV? I don’t even remember far back enough to know whether III was delayed. The simple truth is that, most likely, Rockstar simply wants to focus on making GTA VI every bit as mind-blowing as their other mainline releases. They said as much in their statement, which you can read here.

I myself expect graphics beyond the level of Red Dead Redemption 2. Imagine that: Vice City, in that sort of detail? Yeah, that’s going to take some time.

When will GTA 6 launch?

The new launch date touted by Rockstar is May 26, 2026. So, to those who like reading the stars and counting tea leaves or whatever, to try and establish details about GTA VI, you get to spend a little more time coming up with those crackpot theories.

And that’s not hate, I find them incredibly entertaining. Keep being awesome!

It’s disappointing, but not unexpected

I was having a chat with my coworkers just yesterday, and one of us, I’ll mention no names, said that GTA VI was definitely going to be delayed. I said nah, they wouldn’t do that again. They’ve learned from IV and V.

Well, not even a full 24 hours later, I was proved wrong. Ah well, you can’t win ’em all. So was it really unexpected? No. That was just hope talking. I think we all knew, deep down, that there would 100% be a delay again, and in that vein, Rockstar didn’t disappoint us.

Here’s another thing that won’t disappoint us. GTA VI. Yeah, it’s going to be majestic, and I can’t wait – yet wait we shall.

As a lifetime gamer, I was around to enjoy the NES, witness the birth of the PS1, and live through the golden age that was the PS2. My favorite game (no doubt driven by nostalgia) is Final Fantasy VII, but I'm always on the lookout for my new favorite.
