Despite the hoopla going into next generation consoles this month, this generation still has energy to burn – at least, as far as Call of Duty is concerned.
Activision’s latest game in the franchise, Ghosts, has managed to sell more than $1 billion in sales worldwide into retail, according to the company. It also currently stands as the number one game played on Xbox Live at the moment, and had more sessions in the last 24 hours than Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare during their time period.
“Call of Duty is by far the largest console franchise of this generation,” Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick said in a press statement. “More people have played Call of Duty this year than ever before, logging four billion hours of gameplay. And in the last 12 months, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, including its digital content, generated more revenues than any other console game ever has in a single year. Although it is too early to assess sell-through for Call of Duty: Ghosts, it’s launching at a time when the franchise has never been more popular.”
“This is the must have launch title for the next generation of consoles, and we expect Call of Duty: Ghosts to be the most successful launch title for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 by a wide margin,” added Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg. “In fact, according to GameStop, Call of Duty: Ghosts is their most pre-reserved next gen title.”
We’re eager to see if the next gen versions of Ghosts pan out as well when they release on November 15th for PlayStation 4 and November 22nd for Xbox One, respectively.
