The eight-year partnership between Bungie and Activision has come to an end, with Bungie acquiring the publishing rights to the Destiny IP on the way out. According to a joint statement today from Activision and Bungie, the prolific publisher will no longer have a hand in the Destiny franchise, as it will be owned and developed by Bungie going forward.
The separation appears to be on relatively good terms, as both companies are “committed to a seamless transition for the Destiny franchise and will continue to work closely together during the transition on behalf of the community of Destiny players around the world.”

The aforementioned transitional phase has already begun, according to a separate announcement posted on the official Bungie website. According to the post, Bungie plans to deliver the remaining content outlined on the Destiny 2 roadmap, with more content and special announcements scheduled for the coming months.
Bungie and Activision’s amicable split means that all future Destiny games will now be solely self-published and developed by Bungie. “With our remarkable Destiny community, we are ready to publish on our own, while Activision will increase their focus on owned IP projects,” said the Destiny development team.
