Fans knew previously that Troy Baker wouldn’t be returning to voice Rhys, but others were surprised to hear that Claptrap’s voice has changed as well. Unfortunately, according to the original voice actor, the decision to not be a part of the third game wasn’t one made on good terms.
David Eddings voiced the original Claptrap from previous games but revealed an uglier side of the voice casting when one fan took to Twitter to ask about his involvement. When asked, Eddings replied, “No. For the first time, I insisted on getting paid for my performance and all of a sudden they couldn’t afford me. Now I’m not telling them how to run their business but maybe next time they should put the $12M payment from 2K in the Gearbox bank account instead. Just sayin’…”

Luckily, Eddings is a stand-up guy and put his usual positive spin on the situation before fans could get too upset over the news:
You’re kind but please don’t be too sad. In the end, my exit from GBX created at least three job opportunities for other people so that’s a positive. 😄
Fun fact: When Rikki Simons and I first met we both said, “People think I’m you!”

At this time, Gearbox has yet to respond to Eddings’ statement, though it does bring up the familiar issue that came up when Troy Baker said he wasn’t invited to voice his returning character, even after Gearbox said they did. Good news for fans of Tiny Tina is that Ashly Burch is confirmed to be reprising her iconic role of Tiny Tina, but it is disheartening to see some of our favorites not joining the journey over issues that could not be resolved.
As for the game itself, Borderlands 3 is coming to Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC on September 13th. You can catch up on our previous coverage, including our own hands-on time with the game, right here.
