Gearbox finally gave fans what they were looking for when they revealed Borderlands 3 during PAX East this year and between seeing returning fan favorites (can we talk about Maya’s new hair, please?), to some ferocious new faces, there are a lot of reasons to be excited! That being said, we still don’t have a release date for the game, or even where it will be available. If a recent set of tweets are to be believed, we might have just found out the answers to both of those inquiries.
In a now deleted tweet that appeared on the official Borderlands 3 Twitter account, the possible release date for the highly anticipated title could be September 13th with a Gold Weapon Skins Pack available as a pre-order incentive:
A deleted tweet may be temporary, but the Web Archive is forever. Since “Mayhem” has been a huge tagline since the original teasers began earlier last month, the info could very well be legitimate. The fact that it was so quickly deleted also bodes well, though it is important to remember two things:
- Nothing is official until confirmed
- The date was April 1st, notoriously known as April Fool’s
Still, an official date is something many are hoping for and now that the deleted tweet has gone viral, we’re hoping the rumors of an official reveal later this week turn out to be true.
As for where the game will be releasing, we still don’t know yet for sure, though numerous sources have alluded to a potential Epic Games Store exclusivity deal. In addition to the below tweets from Wario64, a known source in the industry, Gearbox’s Randy Pitchford himself also contributed in a way that seems to support the Epic rumors.

As a customer, I’m happy to shop in different stores – already do! I’ve bought games from Xbox, Playstation, Switch, Steam, Origin, GOG, Humble, Uplay, Epic and other stores. To me, exclusives are fine when they come w/ advantages and when they are short – say, six months 🙂 2/3

Pitchford also added that the team was very interested in cross-platform play, retailer aside.
It will be interesting to see how much of these rumors prove true, or if Gearbox was just playing yet another prank on their fans. Hopefully we’ll be learning soon enough, as an official announcement is expected to drop later this week.
