Best Horror Games to Play in 2024

Alien: Isolation

The Alien franchise has had several video game adaptions, but Isolation is possibly the closest when it comes to offering pure horror. It’s an entirely different thing when you have to survive the horrors of outer space and deadly monsters without the help of any weapons. In many ways, Isolation offers similar experiences that make Alien one of the best horror franchises of all time.

Alien: Isolation has been available for nearly a decade, so the graphics and other features may feel dated. However, there’s plenty reason to still try it out, with new expansions and story content having been released through additional Season Passes.

Dead Space (2023)

The original Dead Space trilogy is arguably one of the finest additions made to the genre of horror games. Unlike Ellen Ripley in Alien, Isaac Clarke is stocked with firepower. He has the necessary tools and skills to survive an alien onslaught filled with all kinds of monstrosities. The 2023 Remake does true justice to the first game, retaining the classical feel of the original release but introducing several technical improvements.

The Remake’s better graphics make the whole experience a lot more immersive as well. This alone makes it worth it for players to play it again if they enjoyed the original 2008 launch.

Resident Evil 4 Remake

Those who managed to play the original on their PS2 and Gamecube consoles experienced a masterpiece of its time, but the recent trend of remakes by Capcom has ensured that gamers can enjoy one of the best horror games of all time on their latest hardware. Like 2023’s Dead Space Remake, Resident Evil 4 Remake does the utmost justice to the original title. It maintains the same narrative and gripping tensions that made it shine out in the early 2000s.

Players get to play in the shoes of Leon S. Kennedy, who has become an iconic name in the world of video game protagonists. The Remake also has received DLC additions – perfect for those who want to enjoy some extra story-based content.

Outlast 2

While Outlast Trials is the latest release in the franchise, it’s a different experience from the original two games. In many ways, the first two games have a greater emphasis on the horror aspect as the entire environment feels much more sinister. The level of fear rises naturally when players have to tackle all the dangers alone. Outlast 2 takes place at Temple Gate, which looks as sinister as it feels. Like Alien: Isolation, Outlast 2 is more about survival rather than fighting the enemies.

Alan Wake 2

Alan Wake 2 is one of the best games to play in 2024, even if someone doesn’t necessarily like horror titles. Remedy has managed to deliver a masterpiece that has captivated the minds of gamers since its October release. Alan Wake 2 falls more closely under the genre of psychological horror games than its predecessor.

Players will experience the stories of two characters – Alan Wake and Saga Anderson. Both characters have their own stories, and the narrative-rich experiences do proper justice to the first title and the horror genre overall.
