Picking your Druid’s race, subclass, and background in BG3
In Baldur’s Gate 3, a Druid’s primary stat is Wisdom, which they use with their spellcasting. As such, our goal is to pick backgrounds and skills that can synergize with this stat.
Character race
Larian Studios made an interesting change from the Early Access version. Initially, each race gave a few ability score bonuses. This has now changed upon full release, since the ability score bonuses now come from your class. Beforehand, there would be certain advantages to being a Druid if you picked a race such as the Wood Elf, or Gold Dwarf. This has now changed, meaning it really doesn’t matter which race you choose!
Subclass
In total, you can choose between three druid subclasses. While each one allows you to use Wild Shape, there are differing specialties between each. At level 2, your Druid can choose between these three subclasses:
- Circle of the Land: Allows you to replenish spell slots out of combat, move swiftly through Difficult Terrain, and guard against Disease and Poison.
- Circle of the Moon: Improves Wild Shape by allowing you to cast it as a Bonus Action, adds a new shape, and you can expend spell slots to regain HP in Wild Shape.
- Circle of the Spores: Grants you unique abilities that can summon necrotic spores, grant temporary HP, and raise a fungal-infested zombie.
Background
There are five skills governed by the Wisdom attribute in Baldur’s Gate 3. These are Animal Handling, Insight, Medicine, Perception, and Survival. Now, various backgrounds might provide you with one (i.e., Hermit with Medicine/Religion and Outlander with Athletics/Survival). However, you can go with the Folk Hero background since it provides proficiencies in two of these (Animal Handling and Survival).
