During the september 2020 Nintendo Direct mini, NIS America revealed the rumored next title in its fan-favorite Disgaea series. Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny, is coming out with a current launch window of summer 2021. And the wild part is, Disgaea 6 will be a Nintendo Switch exclusive. Also, Disgaea 6 will bring a new visual change to the series, utilizing 3D models instead of 2D sprites for the first time.

In Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny, players take on the role of Zed, a zombie who “wallows on the lowest rung on the Netherworld ladder.” Zed and his sister are living together, until a God of Destruction appears to, well, destroy stuff. Using a power called Super Reincarnation, Zed will rise up from that bottom rung and achieve RPG numbers only Disgaea protagonists are capable of.

It’s hard to tell at this stage, but it seems like Super Reincarnation adds some sort of roguelight-flavored powering up to the game. Noted in the official description from NIS America, Super Reincarnation kicks in if you lose, and helps Zed come back stronger than before. Perhaps that’s a failsafe built in for more casual players, along with the also-announced Auto, Retry and Replay options. Being an anime-inspired tactical RPG, folks on either side of the skill threshold tend to be attracted to Disgaea. So tools to help casual players out without changing the core game seems like a good idea.

Also notable in the trailer, we can see a total visual overhaul coming to the Disgaea series. While the actual design and aesthetic is Disgaea as we’ve always known it, the sixth game in the series has transitioned to 3D models, with colorful shading that helps retain said style. This is only the second major visual change to the series, which used low-resolution sprites well into its PS3 period, and didn’t incorporate higher-res assets until Disgaea 4. So fans of the 2D style may have some adjustment to do.

And if you’re not familiar with Disgaea but the Nintendo Direct has you curious, a Nintendo Switch-exclusive free trial period for Disgaea 5 will be available for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers from September 23, 2020 to September 29. So give that a whirl and see if you like it!
