Like many gamers in the 90s, we fell instantly in love with Donkey Kong Country for SNES the moment Nintendo revealed those attention-grabbing images. More powerful systems like Sega CD were on the market, but those impressive character models and detailed environments breathed new life into the 16-bit console, while the game’s success produced two more sequels and a spin-off series on the Game Boy.
Fast forward to 2014, and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze will make its Wii U debut February 21st. Originally on track for a 2013 release, Nintendo opted to delay its promising platformer, and we certainly hope it will be worth the wait.
That said, you’ll once again control Donkey and Diddy Kong, this time through six enemy-packed worlds. In addition, Dixie Kong and other characters (Cranky Kong!) will make an appearance, and it’s a safe bet that numerous collectible items will keep us busy for hours.
Beyond that, Nintendo took full advantage of the 3D graphics to provide different perspectives on the action. Although the game plays like a 2D side scrolling adventure, the camera will often shift as DK and friends blast off to different barrels, among other action-packed scenes.
The result should be a game that plays like its predecessors while at the same time providing the series’ best visuals. We can’t wait.
