The Division 2 is the next installment in Ubisoft’s post-collapse USA shooter, and has drawn quite a bit of interest. Many players interested in enjoying the story want to know if you can play The Division 2 offline or if it’s an online only game, so here’s the deal.

The Division 2 requires a constant internet connection to play. While it does have story missions you can play alone, you’ll still need to be online in order to take part. This applies no matter whether you’re playing on PC, PS4 or Xbox One, though the latter two will also require PS Plus and Xbox Live, respectively.

As an online, loot-based shooter, The Division 2 include a lot of features that depend on an online connection, including rolling changes to the game world and regular updates/additions. A large portion of the late game activities in The Division 2 are also dependent on other players and group activities/rivalries, so you should really be aiming to play the game online with friends when possible.

Lose connection at any time and you’ll be returned to the main menu, but thankfully the saving system is pretty generous, so you shouldn’t have lost much time at all beyond what it takes to log in again. Most players shouldn’t run into any trouble here, but anyone on an extremely spotty internet connection may want to think twice before picking The Division 2 up. If you are having issues connecting, hop over to the Ubisoft Support Forums for help. Of course, it goes without saying that those who don’t have access to the internet won’t be able to enjoy The Division 2.

Now that you know that you can’t play The Division 2 offline, are you still likely to pick it up? If so, take a look at our other guides such as how to craft items and how to join a clan to get started.
