Speak to Variks: At the Gates Mission

First, accept the At the Gates mission. Go to Orbit, make your way to the Reef and look for Variks. Speak with him and you’ll be able to start this mission.

Pretender to the Throne

Return to Orbit and head to the Dreadnaught. Look for a particular mission called Pretender to the Throne, but make sure you’re at Level 36 first; you might be level 40 by this point, so it shouldn’t be a problem. You don’t even need a fireteam to beat Pretender to the Throne, though you can take one with you if you prefer. Strength in numbers.

The Ghost will assist you in finding this mission if you need guidance. It’s not too long a quest, so finish it up and then make your way back to Orbit.

Dreadnaught Patrol

Now look at the map of the Dreadnaught again and a Patrol option. You’ll end up in the Hull Breach. Focus your attention on Taken enemies.

Stay close to the pools of Taken energy, as more will appear soon after. They’ll drop Echoes of Malok, in which you’ll need to pick up 20. They don’t come with each particular kill, but they do appear, so just keep taking on waves of enemies until you have all 20. If they stop appearing, look around for pools of energy and more will reappear nearby.

Talk to Eris Morn

When you have 20 Echoes of Malok, make your way back to the Tower and find Eris Morn. She’ll provide you with the next step necessary to completing the At the Gates quest.

Blighted Chalice Strike: Beat Malok

Go back into Orbit and examine the Moon map. A new Strike should be there, somewhere around the Oceans of Storm region. It’s called the Blighted Chalice Strike. Again, you’ll need to be at Level 36 or higher. Accept the Strike, take some Guardians with you or let the game provide some for you.

This strike should be fairly easy, with a few Taken to defeat. Kill the Blights first, so you don’t have to worry about any respawns. The Ghost will guide you in case you can’t find them. Once they’re done for, Malok will appear.

When fighting Malok, avoid the Shadow Touched ability. He’ll disappear in a cloud of Taken fog, causing your screen to become disoriented. Additionally sound is muffled, so you won’t be able to hear where he is. Try to find some cover to stay out of his way until the effect disappears. Once it does, shoot him in the head for maximum effect and you’ll be able to bring him down.

Return to Variks

Once you’ve completed the Strike, go back to Orbit and the Reef. Variks will be waiting, and he’ll give you the Dreadfang Legendary Sword at 320 level. This will be a huge upgrade, even to other powerful swords available in the game, and it’ll do massive Void damage against the Taken.
