Work on the Sonic the Hedgehog film sequel has been going well following the success of the first film which was released back in early 2020. For fans looking forward to the future release of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, some information was revealed this week that will likely be exciting to hear.
Yes, we’re talking about Idris Elba as the voice of Knuckles. And no, we’re not joking. The news has been confirmed by Idris Elba himself in the form of a short, but spot-on tweet featuring a picture of Knuckles’ fist and text that reads, “Knock, knock.”
Oh, and it uses hashtags #SonicMovie2 and #Knuckles to help make things extra clear.

The sequel to 2020’s Sonic the Hedgehog movie just keeps on getting better and better. Fans can expect the return of actors like Jim Carrey, and they can also expect new stars including the one and only Idris Elba.
While we won’t get to see Idris Elba on screen, we will get to hear his voice whenever Knuckles speaks in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. If you’re unfamiliar with Idris Elba, he’s acted in a number of movies like Thor: Ragnarok, Stephen King’s The Dark Tower, and The Suicide Squad to name just a few.
Elba has also done a lot of voice acting work, so even if you’ve never seen Elba, you may recognize his voice. Elba has voiced characters including Coach Ernie Ames in the NBA 2K20 game, Fluke in Finding Dory, Shere Khan in The Jungle Book (2016), Chief Bogo in Zootopia, and Truck in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Again, to name just a few.
To view the full body of Elba’s work, we recommend checking out his IMDB page. You can also check out the IMDB page for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 which has casting information up and will likely be updated as new information about the film is shared.
Idris Elba will join previously announced cast members including James Marsden, Jim Carrey, Ben Schwartz, Natasha Rothwell, Tika Sumpter, Shemar Moore, and Adam Pally (as reported by Deadline).
Additionally, director Jeff Fowler who directed the first film is returning to direct the sequel, so it sounds like things should be pretty consistent. While we wait to hear more about Sonic the Hedgehog 2, we’re curious what your thoughts are on the casting of Idris Elba as the voice of Knuckles.
