A Director’s Cut Release of Ghost of Tsushima Teased by ESRB Rating

“The game also depicts a man's exposed buttocks as he bathes in a hot spring.”

An ESRB rating submitted by Sucker Punch has seemingly spilled the beans on an upcoming Director’s Cut release for Ghost of Tsushima. As of right now, nothing has been explicitly confirmed by Sucker Punch.

However, it’s possible a formal announcement may be coming soon, perhaps as part of a digital showcase from Sony as some fans have speculated.

A Director’s Cut Release of Ghost of Tsushima Teased by ESRB Rating

Ghost of Tsushima could be getting a Director’s Cut release for PS4 and PS5, as hinted at by a recent ESRB rating submission from Sucker Punch. The information regarding a possible Director’s Cut is interesting as the ESRB page lists it for both PS4 and PS5, and the page indicates in-game purchases being present (but only for PS4).

Given that Ghost of Tsushima had no in-game purchases previously, it’s possible that PS4 users may need to pay to upgrade to the Director’s Cut. We use the word “may” here because again, nothing has been confirmed by Sucker Punch themselves yet.

Other things of note within the ESRB rating page is the mention of users interacting with one another, with that ability available to both PS4 and PS5 users. As many have suggested after seeing this, this is likely in reference to Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, a free co-op multiplayer mode released for the game.

The rest of the ESRB page is a blurb about the reasons why the game is rated M for Mature including our personal favorite, a cheeky reference to Jin’s hot springs butt. Below, you’ll find the full blurb from the ESRB on the game’s rating, you can also read it by visiting the ESRB page itself.

“This is an action game in which players assume the role of a samurai (Jin Sakai) on a quest for vengeance against Mongol invaders in 13th century Japan. Players traverse open-world environments, interact with characters, complete quests (e.g., assassinations), and infiltrate enemy strongholds.

Players use samurai swords, poison darts, and arrows to battle enemies in third-person melee-style combat. Some attacks result in dismemberment/decapitation of enemy soldiers, often accompanied by large blood-splatter effects. Players can also perform assassination kills (e.g., neck stabbing, sword impalement) to dispatch enemies quietly.

Cutscenes depict additional acts of intense violence: a soldier lit on fire and beheaded; bound civilians lit on fire and burned at the stake; a decapitated man’s head held up towards the screen. The game also depicts a man’s exposed buttocks as he bathes in a hot spring. The word “sh*t” appears in the game.”

All in all, we’re eager to learn the full breadth of what’ll be included with the Director’s Cut once Sucker Punch is ready to officially share that information. Until then, we can only speculate on things like when the reveal will happen.

As some fans have suggested, Sony could have a digital showcase planned for the (hopefully) near future. We imagine a reveal trailer for the Director’s Cut of Ghost of Tsushima would be included in something like that.

Until Sucker Punch and Sony are ready to talk more about the Director’s Cut of Ghost of Tsushima though, we’re curious what your thoughts are on the news. Are you excited at the idea of Ghost of Tsushima getting a Director’s Cut release for PS4 and PS5?
