Pyra and Mythra Bring Xenoblade Chronicles 2 to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s Roster

Nintendo continues embracing the power of anime.

To kick off today’s Nintendo Direct, which was also the first “full” presentation of the year, another new character for Smash Bros. Ultimate was revealed. Well, two characters actually.

The “character” is Pyra and Mythra, who because of Lore Reasons are the same person but also not the same person.

This roster addition doesn’t have a specific release date, but it will be coming sometime in March.

Pyra and Mythra Bring Xenoblade Chronicles 2 to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s Roster

The trailer, which this time decides to show Link being murdered since both Mario Brothers sadly passed away in previous trailers, is a comical use of the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 cast.

For the most part it makes fun of Rex not being in the game, since he’s technically the main character.

Pyra and by extension, Mythra, are definitely the second rung on that ladder though.

Pyra is what’s called a “Blade,” an entity that can become a living weapon through a “Driver,” in this case Rex. There’s a lot of lore stuff going on there, so if you haven’t played Xenoblade Chronicles 2, you’re just going to have to rely on a fan wiki like I did!

Mythra is also, for reasons that are probably plot spoilers, an alternate form Pyra takes and can swap to after a certain point in the game.

It seems like Pyra and Mythra are indeed the same character in Smash Bros., rather than an Echo Fighter situation. Nintendo’s post-Direct press release notes that they both take up the fourth slot in the ongoing set of 6 new roster slots that have been rolling out.
