Polish Consumer Protection Agency Monitoring Cyberpunk 2077 Refunds and Improvements

The backlash towards CD Projekt Red over Cyberpunk 2077’s unfinished state has been a hot topic which started in December after the game’s official release.

One of the biggest issues with the game was its poor performance issues on last-gen consoles, performance that was so bad that Sony made the surprising decision to pull Cyberpunk 2077 from its digital store entirely as waves of refund requests poured in.

Now, it seems like Poland’s Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKiK) have taken an interest in the chaos surrounding Cyberpunk 2077 and have essentially asked CD Projekt Red to explain themselves.

In an article from Dziennik Gazeta Prawna, news that CD Projekt Red is being investigated by Poland’s Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKiK) was shared.

According to a statement from UOKiK’s press spokesperson Małgorzata Cieloch, they’ve approached CD Projekt Red and have asked them to explain issues with the game at launch, and what actions they’ve taken (or are taking) to correct them. 

They’ve also asked CD Projekt Red how they plan to address consumer complaints in regards to the game not playing properly on last-gen consoles, with CD Projekt Red making no mention of these issues prior to the game’s release. After CD Projekt Red responds to UOKiK’s questions, the agency will decide what the next course of action will be. 

One potential outcome could be that UOKiK finds CD Projekt Red in the wrong and fines them up to 10% of their income according to input from Dominik Jędrzejko, partner and attorney-at-law at Polish law firm Kaszubiak Jędrzejko Adwokaci.

Another possible outcome could be that CD Projekt Red is asked to give those who bought the game for last-gen consoles (Xbox One, PlayStation 4) “additional bonuses” such as free digital content. 

As of right now, a decision has yet to be made. All we know is that UOKiK is looking into it and that CDPR could find themselves facing fines should UOKiK determine the company was in the wrong for things like failing to be open and transparent about the game’s performance on last-gen consoles.
