Sometime between last night and this morning, according to my email inbox, SNK announced that its recent fighting game revival, Samurai Shodown, is coming to the Microsoft family of next-gen consoles. Aiming for a winter 2020 launch, Samurai Shodown will brandish its weapons on the Xbox Series X and S.

Currently, Samurai Shodown is available on every possible platform, including the Nintendo Switch and even Google Stadia. After standing in the sidelines for several years since a somewhat botched attempt at a remake on Xbox 360, this soft reboot for SNK’s weapons-based fighter has been critically well-recieved both by casual fighting fans and the hardcore community. Presumably on the Xbox Series X and S consoles, Samurai Shodown will see a resolution bump, allowing the striking visuals to look even cleaner while maintaining that crucial 60 fps frame rate.
As far as the official release is concerned, there are no details on what exactly this release means for Samurai Shodown on next-gen platforms. We reached out to SNK’s representation for details on technical updates, as well as Smart Delivery support. Unfortunately, SNK had no further details to share at this moment, so we’ll have to wait and see in the coming months. The press release also shows no mention of the PlayStation 5, which could mean that Microsoft has secured a timed exclusive, or there’s some other marketing strategy at work here. But considering how Samurai Shodown has been ported to every current platform, we’ll be pretty shocked if that doesn’t happen eventually.
Samurai Shodown is a somewhat unconventional fighting game, when you compare it to its contemporaries. Rather than big combos or flashy, speedy action, Samurai Shodown is a much more meticulous, patient sort of game. Every move has a lot of startup and recovery time, and a single, well-placed strike can eat half a lifebar. This has contributed a lot to its casual appeal oddly enough, and fans watching tournament streams have really responded to this style as well. So with the game’s transition to next-gen consoles, we’re excited to see what that means for SNK and SamSho’s future.
