Live-Action Yakuza Movie Announced

Long live Goro Majima (and Kiryu I guess)

Today, in an exclusive post from Variety, Sega announced a live-action Yakuza movie would begin production. This movie will be made with 1212 Entertainment and Wild Sheep Content. 1212 is most recently known for producing “Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark.”

Attached to this movie are Erik Barmack, Roberto Grande, and Joshua Long, who will produce. No writers have been assigned to the film yet.

The post on Variety dives a little deeper into why Yakuza is an excellent choice for their next project.

“Yakuza offers us a new playground in which to set compelling stories with complex characters in a unique environment that audiences have rarely seen before,” 1212 said. “The saga of Kazuma Kiryu has a built-in cinematic appeal – a mix of kinetic action with bursts of comedy, multiple converging storylines, and a gripping journey towards redemption.”

If you’re interested in playing Yakuza, Yakuza 0 is an excellent starting point for new fans. It’s a prequel that offers everything fans from the series love like bizarre side-quests, quirky characters, and an emotional story. 

If you fall in love with Yakuza 0, as we know, you will. Yakuza 1 and 2 were remade for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC under the new name Yakuza Kiawami and Kiwami 2.

While Kazuma Kiryu is the main focus of the series, a fan favorite that we hope to see in the movie is Goro Majima. Majima is easily the most eccentric and over the top character in the franchise.

That’s not to say that Kiryu isn’t a great character, because he is. Despite all of the setbacks in his life from being framed for murder to having near-death experiences every twenty minutes, he is still the heart behind the series and excellent motivation.

We don’t want to spoil anything, but Majima sure has one hell of a journey throughout the series. This movie must get the casting correct. We have seen countless white-washing in non-western stories. 

So much of Yakuza’s charm comes from its cast, and to do it justice, the movie needs to abide by that.
