The what and when of the next big phase of Rocket League!
This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

Rocket League, the spiritual successor to Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars, has seen significant success since its release a few years ago. Back in July, Psyonix announced that Rocket League would go free-to-play, and now we finally know when.

On September 23, Rocket League will be completely free-to-play, but that’s not all. The latest update for players has a myriad of new features alongside it.

The first of these being Competitive Tournaments. These will consist of a 32 team or solo bracket that players can compete in to earn tournament credits, which will be used to purchase new in-game items.

There will be new tournaments every day for players to enjoy.

This update will also bring new game-wide challenges. These challenges are described in the latest PlayStation Blog post.

“Up for a Challenge? Free to play is coming with game-wide Challenges that you can complete to earn items and XP. All players will receive three Weekly Challenges, while Rocket Pass Premium owners will get three additional Challenges each week. Plus, there are Season Challenges that will be live all season long that grant better rewards.“

Season one and new competitive ranks will also be available with this update. With new ranks being added to the top of the ladder, competitive just got a whole more, well, competitive.

The Grand Champion rank, which was the crème de la crème of Rocket League competitive ranks, is now being split into three different ranks. Grand Champion 1, 2, and 3 and an even higher rank Psyonix is calling Supersonic Legend.

It’s going to take some serious work to make your way up these ladders, so be ready to give it all you got. Take on these ranks with friends or solo, whatever floats your boat.

On September 23, the Rocket Pass, Competitive Tournaments, and Competitive Season will follow the same start and end date. While we know the start date is September 23, we don’t know the end date for Season One.

Psyonix was acquired by Epic Games last year, and it seems the studio has been pretty busy since then. There is plenty of new content to dig into in Rocket League, and it sounds like the game is about to change even more on September 23.

That sure is a lot of content coming to Rocket League shortly. Let us know what you think on the official Prima Games Twitter or Facebook.
