Obsidian appeared during the July 23 Xbox Games Showcase to reveal a new DLC expansion for its most recent open world RPG, The Outer Worlds. It’s called Peril on Gorgon, and it’s set to launch on September 9, 2020.

Check out the reveal trailer, which provides more details on what to expect from the next chapter in The Outer Worlds:

To kick this story off, the player and their motley crew aboard the Unreliable space ship receive a strange message. By the way the message is paired with a severed arm. This takes the crew to the Gorgon Asteroid, a tremendous scientific base that is now dilapidated and dangerous. A new character Minnie Ambrose has the crew investigating her mother, the director of the original Gorgon Asteroid project. Naturally, science fiction hijinks ensue.

The tone here takes on more of a pulp noir vibe, which is a bit of a departure from The Outer World’s more familiar Fallout-like vibe.

Peril on Gorgon will be woven into The Outer World’s campaign, adding the new planet to the story as well as three new science weapons. Players will also have to go back to other areas in the game as part of the new storyline, which is said to last around six to eight hours.

The Outer Worlds was released late in 2019, and was the final game released by Obsidian as an independent developer. It was published by Private Division, a subsidiary of Take-Two Interactive started to publish indie games alongside Take-Two’s much larger Rockstar Games and 2K subsidiaries.

Before The Outer Worlds released, Obsidian was acquired by Microsoft and moved under the Xbox Game Studios label. It was a day one Xbox Game Pass release, but it remained a multiplatform title and even came to Nintendo Switch earlier this year.

Following the Peril on Gorgon reveal, Obsidian stuck around to announce the first project the studio will launch officially under the Xbox Game Studio brand, revealing the title and setting. It’s called Avowed, and appears to be connected somehow to the Pillars of Eternity series.
