We first learned about the Borderlands movie last year with the most recent news being the upcoming adaptation has landed Chernobyl, Hangover writer Craig Mazin would be taking over the script back in February, and that Eli Roth would be at the helm as director. Since then, news has been mum until now. The Borderlands movie has officially landed its Lilith and she will be played by none other than the iconic Cate Blanchett.
Roth and Blanchett have a previous work history together with their previous project, The House With a Clock in Its Walls. Since then, Roth has mentioned that he would love to work with the actress again and now it looks like that’s going to be a reality!
Speaking with Variety, Roth told the site: “I’m so lucky to have the amazing Cate Blanchett starring in ‘Borderlands.’ We had the most incredible collaboration together on ‘The House With a Clock in Its Walls,’ and I believe there’s nothing she can’t do. From drama to comedy and now action, Cate makes every scene sing. Working with her is truly a director’s dream come true, and I feel so fortunate that I get to do it again on an even bigger scale. Everyone brings their A-game to work with Cate, and I know together we’re going to create another iconic character in her already storied career.”
For those that may not know, the Borderlands franchise hails from Gearbox and began its cell-shaded journey of awesomeness back in 2009. With a few spin-offs and three full games later, the Borderlands series continues to prove that this type of humor and art style very much has a place in gaming, and now it will have a place in cinema as well.
For the Borderlands movie, Mazin will be joined by Eli Roth, Avi Arad, Randy Pitchford, and Straus Zelnick for this new endeavor. “I’m so excited to dive into the world of Borderlands and I could not be doing it with a better script, producing team, and studio. I have a long, successful history with Lionsgate – I feel like we have grown up together and that everything in my directing career has led to a project of this scale and ambition,” Roth previously mentioned when the news originally broke.
“I look forward to bringing my own energy, ideas, and vision to the wild, fun, and endlessly creative world of the game. Randy Pitchford and everyone at Gearbox have been incredibly supportive of my ideas – it really feels like a perfect storm of creators coming together. We are out to make a new classic, one which the fans of the game will love, but also one which will find new audiences globally.”
