There are many ways to play Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Want to play with your Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons? Go ahead. Do you prefer the classic Gamecube controller? Feel free to use that too. You can also use the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has three controller settings for these three options, and below you’ll find an overview of each control layout in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Attack, jump, and your Special are mapped to the face buttons. To grab someone, all you have to do is hit either of the two bumpers. Pressing both bumpers contemporaneously will bring up your shield. If you want to taunt someone after you use the right analog stick to engage your Smash Attack, use the D-Pad.

If you have tiny hands, maybe this option is for you. Or maybe you just like holding small things with your large hands. Whatever the case, the Joy-Con option is still functional. The right arrow is attack, up and left arrows are jump, and the down arrow is your special. Your shield is SR and grab is SL. Unfortunately, there is no default D-pad taunts. As an alternative, you can map your taunts to L/ZL or R/ZR.

If you like the classics, then this is the configuration for you. For many of you Super Smash fans, this should be familiar. X and Y is jump, A is attack, and the small red B button is your special. Your smash attack is relegated to the C-stick. Taunting is mapped to the D-pad. In the heat of battle, if you need your shield, press the left or right bumper. To grab your opponent press Z.
Keep in mind these control schemes are the default configurations for each scheme, but each of these options can be customized further. If you find a configuration to your liking, you can save it. Feel free to experiment with different button mapping layouts in order to gain a competitive edge.
