Bethesda Outlines the Future of Fallout, Starfield, and The Elder Scrolls in Major Studio Update
Roadmap outlined.
Things haven’t been great at Xbox over the past few weeks, with layoffs affecting its gaming division, including ZeniMax and studios behind some of its biggest franchises, such as id Software. Today, Bethesda Game Studios shared an update on what’s next for its leading franchises, including Fallout, The Elder Scrolls, and Starfield.
Here’s a breakdown of everything announced, along with the studio’s roadmap for the years ahead.
Continued Support for Starfield
While no Starfield sequel has been announced, Bethesda confirmed that the RPG will continue to receive new content and support as it enters Year 3. This includes new stories set across the Settled Systems, targeted gameplay improvements, and additional updates ahead of new Starborn content planned for next year.

Fallout’s Future, Including a Reunion with Obsidian
Bethesda has multiple Fallout projects in development, and here’s a quick summary of everything announced:
- Fallout 5 remains Bethesda’s long-term destination and is currently in preproduction.
- Raven Rock is the next major expansion for Fallout 76, serving as a prequel to Fallout 3.
- Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas remasters are in development, though no release window has been announced.
- Fallout 4 has surpassed 35 million copies sold.
- Fallout Shelter will receive new Seasons, while an unscripted Fallout Shelter TV project is in development with Amazon Studios and Kilter Films.
- Production on Fallout Season 3 is already underway. Bethesda is planning a special celebration for Fallout’s 30th anniversary in 2027.
- Obsidian Entertainment is collaborating with Bethesda on a new Fallout project, though no further details were shared.

Bethesda Softworks
The Elder Scrolls VI Development Is in Full Swing
The Elder Scrolls VI is now Bethesda’s primary development focus, with the majority of the studio currently working on the sequel. The company says development is “on track,” while ZeniMax Online Studios is working more closely with Bethesda Game Studios on the franchise as it continues to support The Elder Scrolls Online.
Bethesda’s Next Generation Starts with Creation Engine 3
Both The Elder Scrolls VI and Fallout 5 are being developed on Creation Engine 3, which has been in development since Starfield’s launch. Bethesda says the new engine allows its teams to work on multiple projects simultaneously while introducing new tools, rendering technology, and gameplay systems for the studio’s next-generation RPGs.
Major news like this should’ve been exciting, but it doesn’t quite land the same after last week’s brutal layoffs and the uncertainty over what’s next for the talented people across Xbox’s studios.
