Can You Add Storage Containers on Tadpoles in Subnautica 2?
Well, that was an eye opener for everyone who didn't catch it.
If you ever wondered if there’s a way to add storage to your Tadpole vehicle in Subnautica 2, you are not alone. I discovered this very late into the game, which was mindblowing.
There’s actually a way to add storage to your Tadpoles, and it is not even through the tool upgrades from the mod stations. Here’s a short guide on how you can add a container or storage to your Tadpoles in Subnautica 2.
How to Add Storage Containers on Tadpoles in Subnautica 2

Well, as seen in the image above, you’ll see a Tadpole with an attached Portable Locker on the back. Your Tadpoles actually have a hardpoint where you can attach a tool or a container. In this case, the obvious choice is a Portable Locker, which you might have already encountered earlier when exploring. If you scan these things early, you’ll also unlock the craft for it, just in case you are already in another base and you left all your Portable Lockers.
To craft a Portable Locker, grab your Habitat Builder and go to the construction menu. Go to the Utility category and look for the Portable Locker, which would need 4x Titanium to craft.
Once you have a Portable Locker and a crafted and working Tadpole, grab the Portable Locker and go to the back of the Tadpole. Look at the hole below the engine, and there should be a “Attach to Hardpoint” interaction that shows up. Attach the Portable Locker to the Tadpole, and you should be good to go.
The Portable Locker holds 15 storage slots, which is still better than nothing. Sadly, you can only have one attached tool or utility to the Tadpole. It is also worth noting that you can attach tools like a Feedback Resonator or Habitat Builder to this hardpoint. There’s really no point in doing that since you can literally grab a Portable Locker and place those tools inside the locker. But, there could be some rare situations where it could come in handy, especially if you accidentally leave your Portable Locker in your base from unloading all the materials.
When you reach near the end of Subnautica 2’s early access, you’ll also find the Tadpole Haul Chassis upgrade for your vehicle. It needs 4x Titanium Ingots, 3x Stronium, 3x Enameled Glass, and 1x Dedicated Core. The Tadpole Haul Chassis upgrade holds 30 storage slots and also keeps at least two other passengers safe from attacks. However, this replaces the Scout Ray Chassis, which is better for getting around and overall mobility.
Apart from these storage upgrades, we can also go through the Tadpole’s upgrades, which are the following:
- Strike Armor – reduce incoming damage from attacks and collisions.
- Cavitation Muffler – reduces the noise of the tadpole.
- Photovoltaic Charger – charges the tadpole’s power in shallow waters during the day.
- Tadpole Depth Module Mk. 1 – allows you to dive deeper (mandatory and up to a depth of 450 meters).
- Engine Efficiency – optimizes engine function to reduce power use by 20% (can stack up to four times).
To get these modules or upgrades, you need the Modification Station and the specific crafted modules. Once you craft one, you can go to your Tadpole and access the tiny storage or compartment near the Power Cell area, and it opens up the mod storage for the Tadpole with only four slots. You can choose any four upgrade modules above and insert them here to apply the upgrades.
