Hytale is now available in early access, featuring several game modes to try out, along with support for multiplayer. It isn’t available on any mainstream PC client, however, and has its own dedicated launcher that you need to sign into. But what about offline play? Here is a complete breakdown.

Can You Play Hytale in Offline Mode?

Yes, you can technically play Hytale in offline mode as long as it isn’t a multiplayer session. However, there are a few caveats to keep in mind:

  • There isn’t a dedicated offline mode in Hytale, meaning you can’t enable an “Offline Mode” from the launcher or through the in-game settings. Offline play is activated conditionally.
  • If the launcher isn’t running and you’re disconnected from the internet, you won’t be able to launch the game in offline mode because an initial sign-in is required. You are basically locked out of the game until an internet connection is available.
  • If the launcher is already running and you lose your internet connection while it’s active, you will still be able to play in offline mode. You will see the following prompt, but the “Play” button will be available.
  • If you’re already playing Hytale and lose connection, the game will automatically switch to offline mode.
  • Finally, if you are in offline mode due to some network loss or issue, you’ll see a “Go Online” option at the bottom of the launcher to switch back to online mode when your connection is restored.

One of the recent hotfixes addressed this somewhat, where the client will switch to offline mode if a session becomes invalid. Here is the relevant bit about this new behavior from the patch notes:

Client now switches to offline mode when session becomes invalid.

While it’s great that the game can be played offline, I think a proper offline mode should be added eventually. Even though the single-player modes are technically in an offline state, it’s not a true offline mode.

Since Hytale is in early access, I’m sure these features will be gradually added to the game. Even though early access is supposed to last for a year, the developers have committed to supporting Hytale for the next 10 years.
