It may be December, but Square Enix isn’t slowing down with major releases, and Octopath Traveler 0 is one of their best titles of the year. It’s also the perfect game for handhelds, thanks to its low system requirements, and it comes with a sizable demo to check out as well.
If you played the demo on a Steam Deck or on Linux, the demo progress might not automatically carry over to the main release. Here is how to manually transfer Octopath Traveler 0 demo save files into the full game.
Transfer Octopath Traveler 0 Demo Save Files on Steam Deck
To transfer your progress from the demo to the main release, you need to first locate the files and move them to the new folder created specifically for the full release.
Follow the steps below to do this:
- Make sure you have launched the launch version of Octopath Traveler 0 least once to generate the local data folders.
- Now, in Game Mode, head over to your Steam library.
- Select Octopath Traveler 0, press the options button, and select Properties.
- Here, in General, disable Steam Cloud (for now).
- Now, switch to Desktop Mode on the Steam Deck and open Dolphin (file explorer).
- Head over to the following location:
primary/steamapps/compatdata/3014330/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Documents/My Games/Octopath_Traveler0/Steam/[STEAM ID]/SaveGames/
- Copy all the files with the .sav extension
- After that, head over to the following location
primary/steamapps/compatdata/3014320/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Documents/My Games/Octopath_Traveler0/Steam/[STEAM ID]/SaveGames/
- Paste the demo save files in this folder, but remove “Trial_” from the .sav file names.
- Now, head back to Game mode and start Octopath Traveler 0.
- Your save data should now be picked up properly when you start playing.
- Once that’s confirmed, close the game and head back to its Properties in the Steam library
- Toggle Steam Cloud back on, and when you launch Octopath Traveler 0 again, select local saves to be updated to the cloud.
This seems to be a common issue with other demos on Steam Deck as well, and it can be a bit tricky to find the files. Just keep in mind that 3014330 is the ID for the demo version of Octopath Traveler 0, while 3014320 is the ID for the full release.
I hope that the developers address this somehow, but I really doubt they will. For now, it’s just moving files around, whether you’re on a Steam Deck, Proton or any other Linux-based system.
