There are a lot of ways to increase your population, and if you are always struggling to keep up with your workforce, here’s everything you can do to get more people.

All the Ways to Increase Your Population in Anno 117 Pax Romana

Meeting the needs of the residents

Each resident has a specific set of needs. By selecting any of the resident houses, you can view all their needs and expand on the details by clicking the drop-down arrow for each need.

You’ll see some of the needs have attribute increases, such as increases in Income, Happiness, Knowledge, Population, and more. To increase the population, you must meet the needs that increase the population. However, it is better to meet all the needs anyway. If you are strapped for Denarii or money, focus on supplying them with needs that increase income first.

To see if you have maxed out the population for each residential home, refer to the image above and look at the total population of the unit, which includes other bonuses.

As you upgrade through higher tiers, each house will have significantly more needs, increasing the total population even more. In a growing nation, you’ll want to slow down upgrading residences, especially on tier 3 and above.

Since each house holds more population as the tiers get higher, upgrading them even more loses a significant chunk of your workforce. Make sure everything is okay when upgrading your residences.

Public Service Building Buffs

There are several public service buildings that increase your population, like the Taverns, Markets, Baths, Forums, and more.

Each public service building or Marvel (Baths and Forums are categorized as Marvels) has an “Area Effect” that increases population, along with other significant buffs.

When you build these structures, their area of effect encompasses everything they can reach on the road. If they affect hundreds of residences, you are going to increase your population by hundreds or even thousands with just one building. It is best to keep these buildings central to buff all residences and make sure to have Paved Roads for better reach. There are also research or discoveries that expand the reach of these buildings even more.

Research or Discoveries

There are specific nodes that increase your Workforce, which are usually tied to specific resident tiers. While it doesn’t directly increase your population, increasing your workforce could help solve your problems.

You can do just that with a little research.

Worshipping a specific Patron God

While this is completely optional, you can increase your population by worshipping Ceres or Epona and gaining enough Beliefs to gain the Patron Gods’ buffs.

  • Ceres (Confarreatio) – All residences provide additional population.
  • Epona (Reins of Prosperity) – Production buildings provide additional population.

By selecting these Patron Gods, you can enjoy these specific buffs to the population when you increase your beliefs.

In the religion screen, as seen in the image above, you can see the progress bars along with some milestones underneath the bar. Those milestones increase the buffs listed above even more, so you can indirectly increase your population by increasing your island’s Belief. Just remember that this is only specific to the island that worships these Patron Gods. Since every island can worship a different Patron God, you can maximize other buffs by catering to the island’s strengths.

Note: It is worth pointing out that building military units or even ships costs workforce. If you look at a Trireme ship, a military version costs 35 Libertus Workforce. That’s not for constructing the ship, but it is a permanent maintenance cost using your Libertus Workforce throughout the life of the ship. If it dies, you gain the workforce back.
