Steam blesses us with 4 free games for a limited time

Is it my birthday?

Every so often, Steam decides to bless us with a few free games. This week, we have mostly strategy/tactics games, so if you’re a fan of the genre, you’re in for a treat this weekend.

Without further ado, here are four free games that Steam has decided to bless us with, like it’s all of our birthdays, just in time for the weekend.

Battlestar Galactica Deadlock

This game is a must if you’re a fan of the show. You should still pick it up if you aren’t, though, as it provides us with a delightful strategy and tactics experience. It’s probably one of the best spaceship battle games out there, and I’ve played FTL before, too.

It’s plenty of fun, as its Very Positive rating on Steam tells us, but there is a minor drawback. The base game is rather limited, and if you really get into it, you’ll likely feel the need to buy the DLC. You do get the base game free, though, so it’s a good chance to check whether you actually enjoy the game before spending any real money.

Grab it free on Steam now. The offer ends on 17 July 2025.

Fantasy General II

If you played and enjoyed any of the Age of Wonder games, you’ll likely enjoy Fantasy General II. It plays kind of similarly, and it also reminds me a bit of the Civilization games. However, it goes deeper into the combat and unit levelling aspects, making finding artifacts and using veteran soldiers your key winning strategies.

It’s a fun time for a free game, and it’s absolutely worth a download and, at the very least, some decent play time.

Grab it free on Steam now, the offer ends on 17 July 2025.

Field of Glory II: Medieval

Here’s another tactical turn-based game, this time focused on medieval combat. It also feels similar to the Civilization or Age of Wonders style, but uses a square grid instead, kinda like a chessboard. Makes sense, since it’s actually based on a board game.

This game has also garnered a Very Positive Steam rating, though it’s only had around 390 reviews. It’s not every day we get free games from Steam, though, so grab it now. The offer ends on 17 July 2025.

Caribbean Crashers

Okay, this one feels a lot like an old-school Flash game. Remember those old browser games? Yeah, like Angry Birds. This is kind of like that, but with pirates and maybe a bit less polish. Also, less aggressive monetization, thank goodness. It actually reminds me more of a game I think was called Castle Crusher or something like that. I remember playing that on Kongregate back in the day, and it was a fun time.

Caribbean Crashers is a fun little time waster, and it’s only managed to get 33 positive reviews so far. But being free, it’s still well worth… “buying.”

It’s also free on Steam until 17 July 2025.

As a lifetime gamer, I was around to enjoy the NES, witness the birth of the PS1, and live through the golden age that was the PS2. My favorite game (no doubt driven by nostalgia) is Final Fantasy VII, but I'm always on the lookout for my new favorite.
