How to Charge the Nintendo Switch Controllers and Console

There are a few different ways you can charge the Nintendo Switch and the Joy-Con controllers given that the new system is a console and handheld hybrid. This article covers all of the different ways you can charge the Nintendo Switch controllers and console, and how you can charge both at the same time if you’re having an extra long gaming session. You may need to buy an extra charger for the Nintendo Switch or Joy-Con controllers.

Charging the Nintendo Switch

The Nintendo Switch comes with one USB Type C charger that can connect to the tablet portion of the system, or directly to the dock. If you’re playing on the go you can connect the USB charger to the bottom of the Switch and continue to play if you have a wall outlet nearby. Unfortunately, this is all the included charger will allow you to do.

If you want to charge the Nintendo Switch through a USB port in a car, on a laptop, or even on your home PC, the included cable won’t help you. It’s a USB Type C charger, but it’s connected to an AC adapter and cannot be disconnected to reveal a traditional USB plug like most other USB chargers. If you wish to charge in this manner, your best bet is to buy a standard USB Type C cable if you don’t already own one.

Charging the Joy-Con Controllers

Out of the box, the only way to charge the Nintendo Switch Joy-Con controllers is by connecting them to the tablet portion of the system while it’s plugged in to a power source. That means you cannot play with the included Joy-Con controllers if their batteries are low and you want to play in TV mode or without the Joy-Cons connected directly to the tablet.

If you wish to charge the Joy-Cons and play the Nintendo Switch in TV mode or without the Joy-Cons directly connected to the tablet, you will need the Charging Grip accessory. This is not the same as the Joy-Con Grip that comes included with the system. You must purchase this separately at the cost of roughly 30 dollars. This allows you to plug both Joy-Cons into the Charging Grip and charge them while still playing.
