There has been quite a bit of speculation since Resident Evil 7 released last night. Many fans have already completed the game, running through it quicker than we thought humanly possible. Now, though, they’ve been left with a lot of unanswered questions. What does the Resident Evil 7 ending mean? Are their multiple endings? Is this the end of Ethan’s story? In this article we’ll do our best to answer these questions and provide players with a small amount of closure with the Resident Evil 7 ending explained.

Obviously, with something like this, spoilers are bound to transpire. If you haven’t beaten the game yet, then turn back now, as things will only get more in-depth as we continue deeper down this rabbit hole.

This is your last warning… once you scroll past the image below, spoilers will abound. Turn back now if you have not completed Resident Evil 7 and do not want the ending spoiled.

Are there Multiple Endings?

Resident Evil 7 isn’t really a game bit around choice. The paths that players take are pretty straightforward, throughout, but there is one really important choice that players will need to make later on in the game. After finding the items needed to make the Serum, and making it, Ethan is forced to use one of the Serums on Jack Baker. Unfortunately, it doesn’t save him, instead it kills him (due to how much the mold had overtaken his body), and Ethan is left with only one vial of Serum to work with. Here players must choose whether to save Mia, Ethan’s wife, or Zoe, the Baker’s daughter who has been helping you throughout the game.

Now, this might seem like a really important choice, but when it all boils down at the end of the game, there’s only one correct choice to make in this moment. If Ethan chooses to save Mia, she takes the Serum and locks herself in a room as she fights off Eveline, who is a biological weapon of war created by the company that Mia works for. Later in the game she shows up to help Ethan, and is later seen in the helicopter, flying away with Ethan after the game ends. This is the good choice.

If players choose instead to save Zoe, and let Mia fall to the virus, Zoe will be cured and allowed to leave on the boat with Ethan. Since she isn’t one of Eveline’s favorites, though, she is quickly killed once you arrive at the Wrecked Ship, making the Serum’s use all but naught. Mia will still show up later in the game, but she won’t be able to control herself, and you’ll have to kill her, and she won’t be saved at the end of the game.

Aside from Mia saving you, and her appearing in the helicopter at the end of the game, the game’s ending stays mostly the same.

What Happened to the Bakers?

With Jack and Marguerite dead, the Baker family is left in shambles. Lucas escapes the Baker residence somehow, and simply vanishes in the wind. You do later find out that he was healed a while ago, and was feeding information to Redfield, who helps you at the end of the game.

Zoe, if you cured her, dies when Eveline attacks your boat. There’s no real closure for the character if you don’t heal her, though. Instead, she simply vanishes, and players are left to wonder where she went and what might have happened to her.

Redfield and Umbrella

After finishing the final boss battle, and taking out Eveline with the Albert pistol, a helicopter drops off several soldiers. One of the men reveals himself to be Redfield, though he doesn’t give a first name, and he helps you to your feet. In the credits, this character is named Chris Redfield, leading many fans to believe that he is supposed to be the original character that was featured in many of the original Resident Evil games. He looks quite different now than he did back then, though, which has also led many to speculate that he is actually HUNK, a soldier created by Umbrella.

Which brings us to our next big mystery, which is the fact that the chopper that Ethan and Redfield (and Mia if you saved her) fly out on has a big Umbrella logo on it. This is confusing for many fans because Umbrella has supposedly been shut down since 2004, when the company collapsed after being found guilty of multiple crimes involving their biological weapons of war (or B.O.W.s). This inclusion of the logo also leads many to believe that Redfield is actually HUNK, as well, since HUNK was a creation made by Umbrella Corp.

Is this the end of Ethan’s Story?

That’s a very good question. While Ethan has technically saved Mia, we don’t really know if this is the end of his story. There are additional DLC planned for the game, but there aren’t really any additional details available about them at the moment. We do know, however, that Ethan’s phone begins to buzz right at the end of the game, which could mean that he will play a bigger part in the narrative going forward.
