How To Survive the Night in Far Cry Primal

Keep a lit torch and an animal buddy handy.

Surviving battles in the daytime in Far Cry Primal can be a piece of cake, mainly because you can see enemies coming at you from a mile away. However, what happens when the sun goes down and night begins? It’s a whole new ballgame.

During the evening, predators like to come out in droves, including packs of wolves that won’t hesitate to take a bite out of you – or, worse yet, bears that strike without warning.

However, there are steps you can take to assure your survival in the wilderness. Keep these tips handy and you should be able to live for another day.

Keep a Lit Torch Handy

One advantage to having a club is that you can set it on fire by dipping it into a bonfire, campfire or another flame source. It’ll eventually burn out, but if you have animal fat on your person, you can re-light it with no problem.

Keeping a lit torch will not only give you better visibility as you’re making your way through Oros, but it’ll also be a great defensive weapon against animals. You’ll learn this early on in the game, as Takkar lights up a torch and uses it to fend off a pack of wolves that start to close in on him. By swinging it around, you can startle them and make them run away.

This doesn’t always work with the animals – sometimes tougher ones, like bears, will try to attack you anyway. In this case, it’s best to stay away from them until daylight comes back around, and you can formulate a better plan of attack. Otherwise, you’re likely to become a meal very quickly, as skilled as you might be in combat.

Use Camps To Your Advantage

Sometimes finding a base camp is the best option you can have, as it will most likely be lit up. This may hinder your progress when it comes to exploring the land, but at the very least, you’ll be a lot safer than just running around in the darkness.

What’s more, some of these camps will provide the opportunity to get some rest, and you can choose to sleep until the morning comes or, if you prefer, wait for another nightfall. Obviously daytime is the better choice, especially if you’re unprepared to fight enemies without the proper tools.

One word of warning – some enemies may occasionally wander into the camp to attack. If you sleep it off, they won’t, but if you’re awake, smaller animals may come in and try to attack. Make sure you have a weapon on you just in case, so you can take care of them quickly and efficiently. The last thing you want to do is be overrun and shuffled out of the camp – and into the darker woods of Oros.

Have an Animal Friend With You

Finally, if you are going to journey into the darkness, you’ll want to make sure you have a friend in tow. Complete the missions that Tensay the Shaman gives you, and you’ll have the Beast Master skill tree open up. This will enable you to tame an animal and have it act as your ally, as the How To Tame Animals guide explains.

Once you have an animal compatriot, you’ll be a bit safer in the darker areas of the forest. You’ll still want to have a lit club so you can see what dangers are about, but now you can summon your animal friend to attack them and fend off others. You’ll want to make sure you lend a helping hand, though, because they could still run out of health, forcing you to summon or tame another one. Keep them healthy, and by your side.

Also, be careful going up against tougher enemies. While you do stand a better chance of surviving against a bear with a wolf by your side, that doesn’t necessarily mean you’re ready to take on the world. Again, it’s best to take them on in the daylight, when you can see them coming and formulate a better plan, rather than making guesses in the dark.

So, to recap – try to find a base camp where you can take it easy for the night (if you can do without exploring for a little bit), make sure you have a good source of lighting by setting your club aflame, and have an animal ally to watch your back. All of these will help you see your way through the morning – and into the next evening, of course.
