There’s more to worry about than the dangerous Udam in Far Cry Primal. A variety of wild beasts roam the land of Oros in search of prey, and Takkar could become a tasty snack for one of these creatures. It’s especially dangerous at night when the most vicious animals go on the hunt.
In this tips feature, we’ll tell you how to kill some of the animals in Far Cry Primal, including packs of Wolves, the Cave Bear and one of the largest creatures in the game, the Woolly Mammoth.
Exploring Day and Night
You quickly learn that wandering around during the day is much safer than when the sun goes down. Nighttime in Oros is significantly more dangerous because the game’s predators seemingly appear in greater numbers and you have low visibility to identify these threats. In some cases you will literally come within a few feet of these animals or they’ll attempt to catch Takkar unawares.
The easiest way to avoid falling victim to these animals is to hang out inside of Takkar’s Cave or one of the Outposts you captured. This gives you the opportunity to sleep until morning. There’s no harm in doing this, and we’ll never tell anyone you were too scared to wander around in the dark. The only potential problem you may run into involves crafting, or a lack thereof.
In one instance we needed wolf skins and had to go out after dark. The good news is these bloodthirsty creatures are afraid of fire, so make sure you access Takkar’s weapon wheel and then light his club. Additionally you can take advantage of Takkar’s Hunter vision, which displays an animal’s heat signature.
Killing Wolves
This is all about upgrading Takkar’s bow or long bow as much as possible, to the point where you’ll be able to slay a wolf with one headshot. You want to sneak around, line up the target and let the arrow fly. Doing this means Takkar lands the first blow to an immobile or slow-moving wolf, whereas hitting a fast-moving one is significantly tougher. Since wolves travel in packs, do whatever it takes to slaughter the entire lot of them before they have much chance to react. If they charge, pull out Takkar’s club, light it on fire and rely on melee attacks until they’re dead.
Killing the Woolly Mammoth
General rule with the Woolly Mammoth, never stand on equal ground. That’s an easy way to get trampled. Instead, go to a place the Mammoth cannot reach and safely attack the beast until it goes down. This is also a great time to rely on an animal companion, like a Brown Bear or Cave Bear, to distract the Mammoth. If you feel cruel, light the Mammoth on fire and watch it charge through Oros setting everything in its path ablaze.
In all likelihood your animal buddy may die during the fight if you’re unable to revive it.
Tip: You can only have one type of beast companion at any one time. In other words, taming two Cave Bears means you still have one to call upon.
Killing the Cave Bear
Your first goal when encountering a Cave Bear is to tame this beast so it can battle alongside Takkar. If this proves difficult, read our guide on how to tame animals in Far Cry Primal.
Tip: You need the Tame Apex Predators skill to tame a Brown Bear.
Should you choose (or need) to kill a Bear, rely on the Woolly Mammoth approach. Gain the high ground and/or put much needed distance between Takkar and his target, then strike from range. This is also an opportunity to pit bear versus bear if you have one available.
While there are more dangerous animals in Far Cry Primal, the strategies we outlined cover most of them. You should attack a Cave Lion much the same way as a Wolf, while you battle Cave Bears, Brown Bears and Mammoths as noted above.
