Disney Infinity 3.0 First Look: The Power of the Force

Star Wars, Avengers and other franchises come together for the biggest Disney Infinity yet.

This fall’s interactive toy and video game line-up will be super competitive, between Activision’s forthcoming Skylanders sequel (which should be announced in a few weeks) and Warner Bros.’ Lego Dimensions, which brings together big time franchises like Back To the Future, The Simpsons and Lord of the Rings.

Don’t count out Disney Infinity, however. After two successful entries that featured Disney heroes and Marvel characters, the series will return stronger than ever with version 3.0, which includes one of the most beloved sci-fi franchises of all time, Star Wars.

Initially leaked a short while ago, Disney made the official announcement last week with a number of favorites from the Star Wars universe appearing in the game. This includes protagonists Han Solo, Princess Leia and Chewbacca, along with villains Darth Vader and Darth Maul. For good measure, characters from spinoff series will also make their way into this adventure, including Ahsoka Tano and Anakin Skywalker from the Star Wars: The Clone Wars series.

There will be individual playsets for each Star Wars chapter, including the original trilogy, the prequels (which includes The Phantom Menace and Revenge of the Sith) and others. Disney already confirmed that players will be able to buy Rise Against the Empire and Twilight of the Republic sets upon release, as well as a bundle based on the forthcoming The Force Awakens film. Whether fighting your way through the snow-covered hills of Hoth and battling AT-ATs, or recreating legendary lightsaber battles, there will be plenty of Star Wars to go around.

In addition, Disney Infinity 3.0 comes with other characters and playsets. Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron will get its own set, complete with a Hulkbuster figure and other additions. The Disney Pixar film Inside Out, which premieres next month, will see a special set featuring characters and scenarios. Other characters will be thrown in as well, including Quorra from Tron and Mickey Mouse.

The Toy Box, where users create their own little worlds, makes a welcome return. This time the developers broke it up into two sections: Toy Box Takeover, where players can once again build their ideal worlds, and Toy Box Speedway, allowing users to create their own race tracks and compete with others offline.

Fans can build levels using a number of items from Marvel, Star Wars and more. Want to trash the place with Darth Vader and the Hulkbuster? Go for it! Feel like creating a FarmVille-like community where you can show others your impressive gardening skills? Done! Whether or not you’ll be able to share levels online, though, remains to be seen.

Disney Infinity 3.0 will give players the chance to level up their characters and take their progress to another version of the game. They progress by completing missions, which in turn lets them buy new upgrades for their character (including new moves) along with extra items used in the Toy Box.

There’s no word yet if progress from older Disney Infinity games is compatible with 3.0, but there are a couple of things to consider. First, Disney Infinity 2.0 supports backwards compatibility, so there’s a chance it will come back. Second, with an Age of Ultron playset, it only makes sense that you’d want to bring characters like Spider-Man and the Guardians of the Galaxy cast together. We should know more next month, when Disney makes a full presentation at E3.

With several developers taking part in creating 3.0 (including Ninja Theory, Sumo Digital and United Front Games working alongside Avalanche Studios), you can bet this Disney Infinity will be the biggest to date. It has everything a Star Wars fan could possibly want, while at the same time taking advantage of other popular Disney franchises. Both our thumbs and wallets are ready.
