There are ten filters in total, but only the default filter (the standard game look) is available from the beginning. Here’s a breakdown of the filters you can unlock:

SerialFilter NameFilter Effect
1Default The default filter presents the game as the developers intended, allowing you to experience Silent Hill 2 Remake in its original form.
290sThis filter adds a nostalgic ’90s vibe, giving the screen a retro feel with added lighting and vignette effects, taking you back to the classic era of horror video games.
3PixelateThis filter not only changes the in-game colors but also pixelates the entire screen. The pixelation is cleverly done, especially with the colors, which are distorted to create a unique visual effect.
4Black & WhiteA classic filter found in many games with a filter option, this one removes all color, leaving only black and white. Shadows appear much darker, and dimly lit areas feel more haunting with the pitch-black darkness.
5Black & White Vs RedSimilar to the black-and-white filter, this version adds a touch of red. Save points and blood splatter remain visible thanks to the filter’s red highlights, which enhance these elements.
6VHSThis filter transforms the screen to look like a VHS recording. The colors become faded, and VHS-style scan lines run across the screen, adding a retro effect.
7CRTWhile this filter also mimics the VHS look, the colors are more vibrant, and there’s an increased screen refresh or “tearing” effect due to horizontal lines that run across the display.
8Outline-PosterizeThis filter seems inspired by the Borderlands series, as it adds a dark outline around characters and objects. It also introduces a posterization effect, which makes gradient colors stand out more prominently.
9Green LUTWhen activated, this filter applies a green hue across the entire screen.
10Red DitheringUsing this filter adds deeper reds and blacks, especially noticeable at the top of the screen.

How to Unlock Filters in Silent Hill 2 Remake

To unlock the nine additional filters in the game, you’ll need to complete Silent Hill 2 Remake at least once. After that, all filters become available for use.

Since the game features a total of eight endings, repeating the runs in New Game Plus mode with the default filter applied could make things boring and repetitive. All eight endings require you to collect different items that become available as you play New Game Plus Mode. This is also hinted at during your first playthrough as you play the game.

With the rest of the nine filters, you have the option to transform how the visuals on the screen look, basically changing things a bit and making them appear differently. Who knows, you may find some filters better than the default one.

How to Change Filters in Silent Hill 2 Remake

To change filters, pause the game and head to the Display & Graphics menu. From there, navigate to the Graphics Mode tab. When you start, you’ll see “Default” as the only option. But once you’ve unlocked all the filters by completing the game, the full list of 10 filters will appear for selection in this menu.

You can change filters at any time using this method—no need to return to the main menu or reload the game for the changes to take effect.

One thing to note: If you activate Colorblind Mode, all filters will be disabled, as the two features cannot be used together.

Should You Change Filters?

While the game gives you the option to change the visuals based on the filter you select, things may not be as appealing as you think. For example, we tried the Black and White filter and it made most objects very dark and a few objects were not even recognizable due to the complete removal of colors other than just the black and white.

While it is appreciated to have the filters in Silent Hill 2 Remake, most players will not benefit from using them in the New Game Plus Mode.

That is pretty much everything you need to know about all filters and how to get them in Silent Hill 2 Remake. While you are at it, for more tips consider reading our guide about How to Reduce the DLSS Ghosting in Silent Hill 2 Remake.
