Games of 2014 – Super Smash Bros. (Wii U, 3DS)

It's been a long wait, and we'll see not one but two Smash Brothers games in 2014.

It’s been nearly six years since Super Smash Bros. Brawl hit the Nintendo Wii. Now we’re getting a new title for the Wii U and 3DS. While having a new Smash game alone is great, what’s really exciting is seeing the new guest characters, and of course, the competitive aspect. We already know about Mega Man, which is huge, but we’re also getting an Animal Crossing Villager and the Wii Fit Trainer. Will we finally see Simon Belmont from Castlevania? How about Dante from Devil May Cry?

As for the competitive side of things, the Smash community was split when Brawl released. Since that time, most competitive Smash players have gone back to Melee because Brawl removed a lot of the more competitive elements from the series. Director Masahiro Sakurai confirmed that the new Smash will be a cross between Brawl and Melee from a competitive standpoint, so the Smash scene will finally get a new title to add to its tournament roster.

One thing that the series sorely lacked is solid online play. Sure, it was featured in Brawl, but the netcode left a lot to be desired. With the online focus of the new Pokemon titles, hopefully Smash players are in for a treat when it comes to the new games on Wii U and 3DS.
