After a long wait, Gran Turismo 6 has finally made its way into stores, just in time for the holiday season. Racing enthusiasts and rookies alike can get their hands on over 1,100 (!) vehicles in the game, including a few that will be made available via downloadable content in the months ahead.
That said, you’re probably wondering, “Hey, where the heck do I start?” Good question. We’ve made a list of ten rides that you shouldn’t be without in Gran Turismo 6. Some will take a bit of money to unlock, while others will only open up after completing some challenges. Rest assured, though, they’re the best cars that you can hit the road with.
Without further ado, let’s check out the cars!
Chevrolet Corvette Stingray (2014)
This sleek little sports car is one of the better rides in the game. How good is it? Kazunori Yamauchi, the director of the Polyphony Digital team, actually took the Stingray for a test drive before the game’s release, just to get an idea of how its speed and handling would translate into GT 6. Assuredly, he got the job done, as it’s one of the best rides in the game. Check out the video below to get a closer look.
Lunar Roving Vehicle LEV-001 ’71
The LRV may not be the type of vehicle you take on a Sunday drive, but the fact that Polyphony Digital would give us the option to drive on the moon with this space buggy is, mind the pun, out of this world. The handling on the vehicle works very well, and despite its odd shape, it’s a blast to take a cruise in. Now, if we could only get a Hummer model for planetary travel.
Red Bull X2014
When Formula One race car designer Adrian Newey pours his magic into a vehicle, it’s hard to ignore. That’s why we can’t get enough of the Red Bull X2014 concept car. It’s a huge step up from the X2010 and X2011 vehicles that appeared in previous games, with smooth controls and the kind of suave build that was made for top speeds. Hitting the track with this would be nothing short of a dream come true. Who knows – it just might happen for you.
Formula Gran Turismo
This sleek Formula One racing car makes its return from previous games, and, as before, will take quite a bit of money to unlock. Still, if high speed is your thing, and you don’t mind having a smaller, more efficient build than your routine cars, the Formula Gran Turismo is definitely the way to go. It’s definitely worth the pursuit.
Ferrari FXX ’07
There are a number of superb Ferrari models in Gran Turismo 6, including the ’84 GTO, the Dino 246 GT ’71, and the Berlinetta passo corto CN.2521 all the way from 1961. Still, the FXX ’07 stands out of the pack – and how. With a masterful build that gets you the most speed for your money, along with a beautiful red paint job (which you can change, by the way) and slick precision handling, this is one car that’ll get you into the winner’s circle.
Aston Martin One-77 (2011)
Though the James Bond-modeled Aston Martin will never leave our racing memory (especially with those machine gun headlights!), we’ll definitely take the next best thing – the gorgeous One-77. With a 355 kilometer per hour top speed, a Cosworth V12 engine that can really dish out some damage and a carbon fiber chassis that holds up in the strongest of weather conditions, this is one of the best vehicles around.
Chevrolet 2013 Dale Earnhardt Jr. #88 National Guard Chevrolet SS (2013)
There are a variety of stock cars to choose from in Gran Turismo 6, including models by Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Juan Montoya and Tony Stewart’s real cars. Still, there’s something about Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s #88 model that stands out, probably because it’s balanced all around when it comes to performance and strength. This’ll get you out in front with ease, and you might even feel compelled to do a little bump drafting, just to get that extra oomph. NASCAR fans, start your engines.
Lamborghini Diablo GT ’00
Every time I hop into a driving game, I always have to try out a Lamborghini – and with so many models available, including the Countact 25th Anniversary, the LP400, and the Reventon ’08, it can be hard to choose just one. Still, I managed to narrow it down to the Diablo GT ’00, colored black. This is one of the few cars that gives you peak performance in speed and handling, while looking incredibly good doing so. It’ll set you back a few bucks, but, boy, is it worth it.
Pontiac Firebird Trans Am ’78
OK, so we might’ve mentioned this in our top ten Forza 5 cars a few weeks back, but we have to give it equal love here – and not just because we’re avid fans of Smokey and the Bandit. The Trans Am still feels like a fresh ride today, with its beautiful body style and efficiency of getting up to a top speed. It’s enough of a fun ride to make you want to grow a mustache and wear a cowboy hat. Take that, Burt Reynolds!
Light Car Company Rocket ’07
We know what you’re thinking – why would we select such a funky looking race car when so many sweeter models are available? Because there’s something about it that makes it stand out in a race, especially when you’re handily smoking the competition. Plus, there’s something about the long egg-like body shape that really stands out. We’d pit these against other Formula One cars with ease just to see how things turn out. Besides, it’s a Light Car!
Gran Turismo 6 is available now for PlayStation 3.
