Should You Play Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) in Honour Mode?

The hardest way to play

Honour Mode in Baldur’s Gate 3 is one of the more interesting additions made as part of the fifth major patch. This mode is arguably the most difficult in-game experience and cranks up the challenges to a whole new level. Naturally, it’s important to understand if this challenging mode is worth your time and energy, or if you should avoid it.

Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) Honour Mode Features

The Honour Mode is the most difficult experience, and it’s far harder to beat than the Tactician Mode. Here are the highlights of some of the major features exclusive to this mode:

  • Bosses can take some extra steps called Legendary Actions.
  • Overall difficulty and rules become harder compared to the Tactician Mode.
  • Permadeath means that it’s all over if you and your party are wiped entirely in any mission.
  • A single save file means that you can’t go back to a particular checkpoint and reload it to alter an outcome.

The increased difficulty isn’t without any rewards, of course, as you get the Foehammer achievement and an exclusive Die skin by completing the game in this incredibly difficult mode.

Is It Worth Playing Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) in Honour Mode?

It depends on whether you’re a beginner or a veteran. If you’re the former, it’s crucial to understand how the game and its systems work. Additionally, Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) has a wonderful plot, which completely changes when you choose a new character. Hence, there’s immense potential for replayability as well, if you’re worried about that.

The first playthrough should be at an easier difficulty, and even the Tactician Mode will be highly frustrating. Once you complete the main playthrough, you can then try to crank up the difficulty and take on a far bigger challenge.

The Honour Mode is a true test of your mettle, and your in-game knowledge of the fundamentals has to be top-notch. Your in-game decisions will have an impact on the outcomes as well, and it’s best to avoid conflict at higher difficulty. If you’re not afraid of a hard test, this mode can certainly be worth your time and extra efforts
