It’s been announced that both Electronic Arts and Disney have signed an exclusive multi-year deal that gives EA the rights to make and publish Star Wars games. The agreement is said to cover titles aimed at core gamers on “all interactive platforms”, while Disney will continue to make social and casual Star Wars games.
Though official titles weren’t announced with the deal, EA did confirm that a trifecta of its developers, namely DICE, BioWare and Visceral Games, are hard at work on Star Wars titles. It’s unknown whether games that were previously in development at the shuttered LucasArts, namely the next-gen project 1313 and the first-person shooter First Assault, will return as part of the deal…but we’d certainly like them to.
“Every developer dreams of creating games for the Star Wars universe,” said Frank Gibeau, president of EA Labels, in a press release from EA. “Three of our top studios will fulfill that dream, crafting epic adventures for Star Wars fans. DICE and Visceral will produce new games, joining the BioWare team which continues to develop for the Star Wars franchise. The new experiences we create may borrow from films, but the games will be entirely original with all new stories and gameplay.”
We look forward to seeing what EA has up its sleeve next month at E3. Hey, any chance we can get a new Dark Forces with Frostbite 3 embedded? Or, hey, how about Episode One Racer HD? Just thinking out loud here…
