Notch No Longer Providing Funding On Psychonauts Sequel

But don't worry, Double Fine is still working on a way to make it happen.

What started out as a kind gesture to get a much-wanted project moving has now dwelled into a question of “It’ll cost HOW MUCH?!”.

Minecraft creator Markus “Notch” Persson previously went on record that he was helping Tim Schafer and his team at Double Fine finance a sequel to the cult PlayStation 2/Xbox release Psychonauts.  However, as of late, Notch hasn’t been so fond of the idea, and has officially backed out of helping to pay for the project.  The reason?  The cost.

Speaking with VentureBeat, Schafer stated, “I think I gave Markus a heart attack when I told him how much Psychonauts 2 would cost.”

Persson added via Reddit, “I somewhat naively thought ‘a couple of million’ was two million. I had no doubt in my mind that a Psychonauts 2 would earn that money back easily. Turns out they wanted 18 million dollars, haha. I don’t have the time at the moment to even try to get educated enough to make an 18 million dollar deal. Perhaps in some distant future when I’m no longer trying to make games, I could get into angel investing. I’ve made one private investment into a game so far, at $100K, and it’s frankly a lot more work than I thought.”

Relax, folks.  After Schafer and his team finish up Double Fine Adventure, they’ll be looking into ways to finance the much-wanted Raz follow-up.  Maybe KickStarter might be the way to go…?
