God of War: Ascension Multiplayer Beta Kicks Off January 8th

Ever since it was officially unveiled earlier this year at a Sony press event, the multiplayer portion of God of War: Ascension has intrigued us, with its malicious combat and its interesting twist on the win-the-match tactics, which require you to stab a nasty, oversized creature in the eye with a rather long spear.  But the time for talking will soon be over, as Sony is just about set to launch the multiplayer beta for the game.

Players will be able to try out the Desert of Lost Souls map, which we played at a press event this year and was also featured at such trade shows as E3 and PAX Prime.  Two modes will be available in the beta, including a team Favor of the Gods, where players work together to win for their squad, and an all-out Favor of the Gods, where it’s every man (and woman) for themselves.  You’ll be able to earn points via “kills, bonus brutal kills, opening chests, capturing domination points, and, if you’re skillful enough, performing executions using the Spear of Olympus,” said a PlayStation Blog post.

The beta is exclusive to PlayStation Plus at the moment, though those people who played the Rise of the Warrior social game – and won – will have access to the beta a little earlier.  Watch your inboxes.
