A few weeks ago you might remember Rare Ltd. speaking out on the possibility of a new Killer Instinct fighting game for Xbox 360, stating: “We all wanted to make KI3, but Microsoft (was) more interested in broadening their demographic than making another fighting game…so it never got made, I doubt it ever will.”
Never say never. According to the Microsoft PlayXBLA site, the company has renewed the trademark for the Killer Instinct franchise, indicating that we haven’t seen the last of the fighting series yet. According to the statement made following the renewal: “We have either renewed or refilled a trademark application in various jurisdictions.”
Don’t get excited for KI3, but do get excited on the possibility of seeing the first two games possibly re-released for Xbox Live Arcade in HD form. With Tokyo Game Show coming this week and the series still having quite a loyal following from the old-school Nintendo days, it wouldn’t shock us if the company had an ace up their sleeve.
We’ll follow up on this once more information becomes available. But Microsoft best hurry. We feel an itch for a King Combo. Or rather a “KIIIIIING combo!”
