What is Mochi (and How to Get it) in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet: The Teal Mask

Besides just being tasty, Mochi has plenty of health benefits, too.

The new Mochi items in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet: The Teal Mask look unassuming at first glance. But looks can be deceiving: these items are actually quite helpful when raising your Pokémon. In this guide, we’ll explain what Mochi is and how to get it in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.

What Do Mochi Items Do In Pokémon Scarlet & Violet: The Teal Mask

There are seven Mochi items in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet: The Teal Mask. Six of them correspond to a Pokémon stat. When used on a Pokémon, the Mochi increases its corresponding stat’s EVs by 10. That means they’re exactly the same as the Vitamin items. You can use as many of one Mochi on your Pokémon as you’d like, so long as you don’t go over the 252 EV limit. If your Pokémon can’t get more EVs, you can’t use the Mochi.

The seventh Mochi item is the Fresh-Start Mochi. This item removes all EVs from the Pokémon you give it to—even if it was fully EV trained! This makes it one of the most helpful training items, since the only way to remove EVs before this was through the EV-reducing berries, which only reduce the EVs of one stat by 10 points at a time. If you have a Pokémon that doesn’t have many EVs to lose, the berries are still the best option because of how frequently they can be found. But if you have a fully EV’d-out Pokémon, feeding it a Fresh-Start Mochi is the way to go.

What are EVs in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet?

EV stands for “Effort Value.” This is a mostly invisible stat in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. Each time you defeat a Pokémon in battle (not in the overworld through the Let’s Go feature), all of your Pokémon that gain experience points also gain a set number of EVs based on the Pokémon that was defeated. For every 4 EVs in a particular stat your Pokémon has, that stat goes up by one point, but there are limits:

  • A single Pokémon can only have a total of 510 EVs, and
  • no single stat can have over 252 EVs (+63 points to the stat).
  • Because 510 is not divisible by 4, there will always be some EVs “left over,” or not contributing to raising any stats.

To “check” a Pokémon’s EVs, you can go to a Pokémon’s Moves and Stats page and press L to show their EVs. If a stat name has a sparkling animation next to it, then that stat has 252 EVs. If the color of this graph is blue instead of yellow, the Pokémon has 510 EVs total. The sparkling can help you tell that a Pokémon has 252 EVs, but otherwise there are no numerical values given, so it’s best to keep track of EVs yourself, especially if you’re training a Pokémon to have different EVs than just 252 in two stats and 4 in a third stat.

Using Mochi can help speed up the process of EV training significantly, or you can use a Fresh-Start Mochi to remove the EVs from a Pokémon that you’ve used but didn’t specifically EV train, or if you simply want to try a different EV spread on it. How to Get Mochi Items in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet: The Teal Mask

After completing the main story of The Teal Mask, the caretaker will give you a set of Mochi items. Completing the minigame nets you a random number of a random variety of Mochi, in addition to other helpful rewards such as evolution items. Ready to oust some ogres and get some Mochi?
