New Nintendo Switch Potentially Shown Off Behind the Scenes at Gamescom

The new Nintendo Switch could release in late 2024 or early 2025.

Renowned journalist Jez Corden has reported that the new Nintendo Switch, or the next Nintendo console, was potentially shown off to a select few behind closed doors at Gamescom. This backs up previous claims that Nintendo plans to launch the new console in late 2024 (sometime after April 2024) or early 2025, with the former being the preferred launch date.

“Heard some rumors recently that Nintendo maybe showed/maybe discussed the new Switch behind closed doors to select press/devs [at] Gamescom,” they posted on Twitter on August 29.

The public has yet to see any design features, hear what specs it will run on, what type of hardware it will sport, etc. All these important cards Nintendo has kept close to its chest, and there has been almost complete silence surrounding the next-gen console. And you know when Nintendo goes dark on a product, you get gems like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Despite the silence, there have been one or two rumors popping up here and there.

What we’ve learned so far from all the news, leaks, and rumors about what Nintendo has planned for their next-gen console is that they reportedly plan on ditching the OLED screen and switching back to the old faithful LCD. Regarding the name of the next-gen console, it hasn’t been confirmed if it will indeed be called the Switch 2, but that suggestion has popped up more often than not. For now, the Switch 2 title is purely based on speculation and talk. Furthermore, Nintendo will reportedly not be moving away from cartridge-based games.

The Switch was an instant hit and became a long-term success for Nintendo, and it’s only understandable why they would want to approach the next one with caution and secrecy, making sure the Switch’s successor is as popular as the Switch itself. Since its global release in April 2017, Nintendo has sold 125.62 million Switch units, making it one of the best-selling consoles of the latest generation and possibly all time.

Thankfully, we might not have to wait long before we get more intricate details on the new Nintendo Switch, with the report stating “full reveal/leaks may be relatively imminent.”
