I just watched Nintendo Direct, and I’m immediately replaying PvZ

Brainzzz

Dragon Ball Sparking Zero, Hyrule Warriors, Persona 3… all huge games, all tons of fun, sure. All were announced for the Switch 2 in the latest Nintendo Direct just minutes ago, so among all of these, why am I most excited for Plants vs. Zombies?

Allow me to take you back to a time when games were just games, and the cozy genre wasn’t really a thing just yet. Every game was played on its own merit, and you either liked a game or you didn’t.

During that time, Plants vs. Zombies burst onto the scene – now 16 years ago. I managed to pick it up soon after launch, and oh man, did I love that game! I spent a lot of hours on it, finally finishing the rooftop levels to end the game.

Now, given the simplicity of PvZ, you’d think that would be that. But no, I was hooked. I wanted more. So I immediately started a new game, and I finished it again. I wasn’t the only one who loved it, of course. It snatched a handful of rewards and received amazing critical acclaim, and for good reason.

Over the years, I’ve finished it several times. The gameplay loop stays fun, stays satisfying. It’s the Schedule 1 of 2009, basically. And now that I’ve been reminded of just how much fun that game was, I’m starting a new playthrough right away.

I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments, though. Did you play PvZ back then? And if not, do you plan on grabbing what appears to be a remake of the original on your Switch 2?

As a lifetime gamer, I was around to enjoy the NES, witness the birth of the PS1, and live through the golden age that was the PS2. My favorite game (no doubt driven by nostalgia) is Final Fantasy VII, but I'm always on the lookout for my new favorite.
